This morning’s service led by Jenny Young was only partially recorded.
The theme was Jonah in a dark space and his knowledge that God was with him. It draws parallels with our own times and reminds us that we can also rely on God in our darkest days.
The congregation joined in two of the hymns with percusssion instruments.
The recording of the communion service is available and we hope that you will be able to join in, in your own homes.

As a preparation for worship we watched the musicians gather to perform.

Call to worship

Brothers and sisters, boys and girls—
come and worship!
Even if you’re tired and worn out—
come and worship!
Lay down the heavy things you are carrying—
come and worship!
Listen to what Jesus wants to tell you—
come and worship!
See if you can discover how Jesus wants to use you—
come and worship!
For Jesus is humble and gentle,
and he will give us everything we need to follow him.

MP 49 Be bold, be strong

Prayers of thankfulness

Lord we come before you in difficult days, but within these days you have sustained us and you have given us blessings.
We lift before you the things which have given us joy.

Forgive us for the times when we lose sight of your blessings. For the times we let our anxieties overwhelm us.  Let these objects be a reminder to us that YOU ARE WITH US.  Lord make us bold and make us strong. Amen
We miss our shared lives and so we say together The Lord’s Prayer as people through the ages have prayed

Reading Jonah 1:17-2:10

Jonah’s prayer
17 Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
1From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said:
‘In my distress I called to the Lord,
    and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
    and you listened to my cry.
You hurled me into the depths,
    into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
    swept over me.
I said, “I have been banished
    from your sight;
yet I will look again
    towards your holy temple.”
The engulfing waters threatened me,[b]
    the deep surrounded me;
    seaweed was wrapped around my head.

To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
    the earth beneath barred me in for ever.
But you, Lord my God,
    brought my life up from the pit.
‘When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.
‘Those who cling to worthless idols
    turn away from God’s love for them.
But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
    I will say, “Salvation comes from the Lord.”’
10 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

MP 284 I love my Lord because He heard my voice
©JMBarnes Performed by Jemma Freestone and Gareth Humphries as a gift to our church

I love my Lord because He heard my voice.
My god, He listens to my prayer.
Because He hears me when I call on Him
Through all my days I shall pray.

My soul was saved from death; my eyes from tears;
my feet now walk before the Lord;
yet in despair I thought my end was near,
my faith in life disappeared.

What can I do to thank God for His love –
for all His benefits to me?
I will lift up salvation’s cup on high
and call on Him by His name.

My vows to Him I promise to fulfil,
to Him I sacrifice my life.
He freed me from the servitude of sin
and now I serve as His slave.

Unite in praise, great family of God,
His children, bring to Him your thanks.
City of peace, where God has made His home
with one accord, praise His name!

Communion and Prayers

Prayer of response
We have come to the Lord’s table,
we have eaten the bread of heaven.
God is the one who will transform us
so that we can see with Jesus’ eyes,
hear with Jesus’ ears,
speak with Jesus’ mouth;
so that we can be the body of Christ in the world,
proclaiming the good news of God’s reign.
Come Lord Jesus! Amen.
