HYMN Mission Praise 560 ‘Praise my soul the King of Heaven’
Henry Francis Lyle (1793-1847)

Welcome, opening prayer, introduction and Bible reading Hosea 2:16-23

God has said, ‘those who are not my people I will call my people’
So we say,
GOD OF GRACE, DRAW NEAR TO US AND MAKE US YOUR CHURCH TODAY.
God has said, ‘be glad and rejoice in what I will create’
So we say,
GOD OF LOVE, DRAW NEAR TO US AND MAKE US YOUR JOYFUL COMMUNITY TODAY.
God has said, ‘this is the one I esteem, he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word’.
So we say,
GOD OF MERCY, DRAW NEAR TO US SO THAT IN OUR LISTENING WE MAY HEAR YOU AND HONOUR YOU TODAY.
God has said, ‘this is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased’
So we say,
LORD JESUS, DRAW NEAR TO US AND MAKE US TO BE ONE WITH YOU IN SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH TODAY.  AMEN.
Hosea 2:23, Isaiah 65:18, Isaiah 66:2, Matthew 3:17

Church News, Bible reading Mark 1:9-15 and Prayer

God of grace and glory,
you call us with your voice of flame
to be your people, faithful and courageous.

As your beloved Son embraced his mission
in the waters of baptism,
inspire us with the fire of your Spirit
to join in his transforming work.

We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns for ever, Amen.

Hosea 2:16-23

“In that day,” declares the Lord,
    “you will call me ‘my husband’;
    you will no longer call me ‘my master.’
17 I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips;
    no longer will their names be invoked.
18 In that day I will make a covenant for them
    with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky
    and the creatures that move along the ground.
Bow and sword and battle
    I will abolish from the land,
    so that all may lie down in safety.
19 I will betroth you to me forever;
    I will betroth you in righteousness and justice,
    in love and compassion.

20 I will betroth you in faithfulness,
    and you will acknowledge the Lord.
21 “In that day I will respond,”
    declares the Lord—
“I will respond to the skies,
    and they will respond to the earth;
22 and the earth will respond to the grain,
    the new wine and the olive oil,
    and they will respond to Jezreel.
23 I will plant her for myself in the land;
    I will show my love to the one I called ‘Not my loved one.’
I will say to those called ‘Not my people,’ ‘You are my people’;
    and they will say, ‘You are my God.’”

Mark 1:9-15

The Baptism and Testing of Jesus
At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
Jesus Announces the Good News
14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
